Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford will preside over Tuesday's meeting of the Board of Public Works in place of Gov. Larry Hogan.
The lieutenant governor is taking on that duty one day after Hogan revealed that he is being treated for cancer.
Rutherford will join Comptroller Peter Franchot and Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp in a meeting that is expected to last several hours as the board goes about its business of reviewing state contracts, Hogan spokeswoman Shareese Churchill said
Churchill said she did not know whether Hogan had entered a hospital.
It is not unusual for lieutenant governors to chair board meetings when the governor is unavailable, especially when the two officials have as close a working relationship as Hogan and Rutherford do.
Rutherford also presided over the June 3 board meeting as a voting member while Hogan was on a trade mission to Asia.
Hogan disclosed Monday that he is undergoing treatment for an advanced case of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and would from time to time ask Rutherford to take his place at events.
Rutherford brings experience to the board because he served during the Ehrlich administration as secretary of general services, representing a department that conducts many of the state's contract procurements.
The board typically meets on Wednesday mornings, but last week's board meeting was canceled by Hogan for what was then described as personal reasons.
