Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous picked up endorsements Friday from two of Maryland’s leading environmental groups.

The Maryland League of Conservation Voters and the Maryland chapter of the Sierra Club announced that they are backing Jealous in his effort to unseat Republican Gov. Larry Hogan.

Speaking at a solar farm in Kingsville, Jealous said he’s a “lifelong, principled environmentalist” and said he’s been driving a plug-in hybrid car on the campaign trail.

He also touted his environmental history, including starting a climate justice program when he led the NAACP and serving on the board of the Environmental Defense Fund.

Larry Hogan, Ben Jealous offer dueling endorsements in Maryland governor's race

Gubernatorial candidates Ben Jealous and Larry Hogan again spent a day touting dueling endorsements on Thursday. Jealous picked up support from the Democratic leaders in the General Assembly, while Hogan, the Republican governor, was endorsed by the statewide Fraternal Order of Police.

Bob Gallagher, a board member of the Maryland League of Conservation Voters, said Jealous is dedicated to environmental principles such as promoting renewable energy and fighting environmental injustice.

“Ben is the real deal,” Gallagher said. “He’s not one of these politicians who is looking for an endorsement to check the box.”
