Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden thanked Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake Wednesday for her support in the wake of a police-involved shooting of a black man.
Rawlings-Blake called Holden after two Baton Rouge officers shot Alton Sterling, 37, during an altercation on Tuesday. The incident was caught on video, sparking protests and national attention.
Holden said during a nationally televised news conference Wednesday that the phone call from Rawlings-Blake stood out. He appreciated that the former president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors was willing to offer help.
"That call meant a lot from the standpoint that Baltimore has been through the same thing that we're witnessing here in Baton Rouge," Holden said.
Anthony McCarthy, Rawlings-Blake's spokesman, said the mayor makes a point to call city leaders during periods of hardship.
She called Orlando mayor Buddy Dyer after the mass shooting at a gay nightclub, he said.
During the Wednesday news conference, Holden also thanked President Barack Obama and Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards for their support.
The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating the Baton Rouge shooting.
"This city is only as great as the sum of its parts," Holden said. "We have a wound right now but we'll be healing and making this city and parish whole again."
