Gov. Larry Hogan announced Tuesday a cabinet secretary will become his chief of staff after the current one leaves the job later this month.

Hogan appointed Sam Malhotra, secretary of the Department of Human Resources, to take over the top staff job on Oct. 26.

Chief of Staff Craig A. Williams, who helped Hogan build his administration after the governor's surprise general election win in 2014, will return to the private sector and work at Johns Hopkins University in a dual role overseeing regional development and helping turn research discoveries into business opportunities.

Malhotra has lead DHR, which oversees social services including foster care, food assistance and child support, since Hogan was inaugurated in January 2015. Malhotra got his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and his master's degree from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown.
