Lierman signs on to Delaney's presidential campaign

Terry L. Lierman, a longtime Maryland political operative and close ally to former Gov. Martin O’Malley, will serve as a chairman of Rep. John Delaney’s presidential campaign, the congressman announced Wednesday.

Lierman, the former chair of the Maryland Democratic Party, had served as treasurer of O’Malley’s unsuccessful presidential bid last year — and was a vocal proponent of that campaign. It remains unclear whether O’Malley is planning to mount another run in 2020.

Delaney, a centrist Democrat first elected to Congress in 2012, announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in July, becoming the first to enter the race. He has already visited several early primary states, and is building a campaign around what he has described as a vision of a more forward-looking economy.

Lierman, a consultant and Montgomery County resident, is the first of what will likely be several co-chairs for Delaney’s campaign. Presidential campaigns usually announce dozens of co-chairs, who serve as surrogates for the candidate.

“We’re going to run an aggressive campaign that’s on the ground early making the case that it’s time to leave the tired battles of the past behind and start focusing on the future,” Delaney said in a statement. “With his knowledge and experience at the highest levels, Terry is a perfect fit for our co-chair.”

Lierman is the father of Baltimore Del. Brooke E. Lierman.
