Several members of Montgomery County's legislative delegation endorsed Rep. Chris Van Hollen's campaign for Senate at an event in Silver Spring on Tuesday -- including some lawmakers who are planning to run for his House seat.
Del. Kumar P. Barve and state Sen. Jamie Raskin -- both of whom are set to run for the 8th Congressional District -- praised Van Hollen at a fundraiser and said they are supporting his campaign to replace retiring Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski.
"We do need a Senate candidate that can win and someone that's going to run a campaign that can win," Van Hollen told several hundred supporters who turned out at the Silver Spring Civic Center. "We are going to run a grass roots campaign."
Van Hollen and his top rival for the Democratic nomination so far, Rep. Donna F. Edwards of Prince George's County, are holding early events in the campaign. Edwards is set to announce the endorsement of seven Prince George's County Council members. Van Hollen has received endorsements from the executives of Montgomery, Frederick and Prince George's counties.
Nine lawmakers stood with Van Hollen at Tuesday's event. In addition to Barve and Raskin, state Sen. Ronald N. Young and Sen. Susan C. Lee as well as Dels. William C. Smith, Marc A. Korman, Sheila E. Hixson, James W. Gilchrist and David Moon.
