Rep. Donna F. Edwards is planning to run for the Senate seat that will be left open by the retirement of Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, making her the second candidate to jump into the high-profile primary.

The Prince George's County lawmaker has been telling fellow Democrats she will announce her candidacy on Tuesday, according to two sources with knowledge of her plans. Her decision was first reported late Sunday by The Washington Post.

Edwards is the second candidate to jump into the race, following Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Montgomery County. She already has the backing of several progressive groups, such as Democracy for America, while Van Hollen secured an early endorsement last week from Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid.

An Edwards aide declined to comment.

Edwards defeated 15-year incumbent Al Wynn in the 2008 Democratic primary. Though her star has risen in Washington she has maintained a level of independence from the rest of the state's congressional delegation -- especially true since the state's 2011 congressional redistricting.
