State Sen. Jamie Raskin raised $553,000 in his bid for Maryland's 8th Congressional District during the second quarter of the year, his campaign said Tuesday.
Raskin's campaign, the first in the race to disclose its fundraising, said 60 percent of its money came from Maryland, and that more than 52 percent of it came from residents living in the district. The campaign is expected to report having over $480,000 on hand.
"We are raising the money we need to get our message of bold progressive change out to the voters," Raskin said in a statement. "And we are proud to have thousands of people getting involved in the exciting campaign we are building."
The 8th District, an open seat next year because incumbent Rep. Chris Van Hollen is running for Senate, has drawn high profile candidates for the Democratic nomination. Former WJLA anchor Kathleen Matthews, Dels. Kumar Barve and Ana Sol-Gutierrez, former Montgomery County Council president Valerie Ervin and former Obama administration aide Will Jawando are also seeking the seat.
Raskin launched his campaign on April 19.
Second quarter campaign finance reports are due to the Federal Election Commission by July 15.
The seat is widely considered safe for Democrats, though it was redrawn in 2011 to include more GOP voters. Based in Montgomery County, it also includes portions of Frederick and Carroll counties.
