Baltimore Orioles owners Peter G. Angelos has funded a political action committee that is paying for TV ads to promote City Councilman Carl Stokes' mayoral bid.

The "Citizens for a Better Baltimore" PAC was founded this month to promote Stokes' candidacy in a crowded field to succeed Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, according to disclosure forms.

The PAC has received $125,000 in contributions, all from Angelos. It is run out of his offices at 100 N. Charles Street. Its chairman is Ronald Eugene Richardson, who works for the Angelos law firm.

So far, the PAC has spent $86,000 on television ads to run from March 25 to April 4, according to disclosure forms.

Neither Angelos nor Richardson immediately responded to a request for comment.

Stokes has been as high as third place (with 14 percent) and as low as sixth place (with 3 percent) among 13 Democrats in polls conducted this year. The Democratic primary is scheduled for April 26.

Angelos has been consistent in his support of Stokes over the years. During the last city campaign in 2011, Angelos, his laywers and business entities gave about $50,000 to Stokes.
