O'Malley talks same-sex marriage on MSNBC

Appearing briefly on MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show Thursday night Gov. Martin O'Malley acknowledged that there is a good chance the same-sex marriage bill he signed last week will be put on the November ballot. 

"The likelihood is that this bill will go to referendum," O'Malley said.

When asked to handicap the results, the governor said: "Rachel I don't think there is anything that turns around the march of progress."

The governor was interviewed live via a satellite link from Baltimore. It was his second appearance on MSNBC in recent weeks to talk about same-sex marriage.

The segment highlighted a recent poll commissioned by advocates that shows that Marylanders would favor the new marriage law by a 52 to 44 margin. Other polls have shown the state evenly split on the issue.

The governor predicted that over the next few months Marylanders will be having conversations about the issue "around their kitchen tables, in their family living rooms and at work."

O'Malley put the force of his office behind a same-sex marriage bill this year, and worked hard to round up the needed votes -- particularly in the House of Delegates which shelved the bill last year.
