Baltimore is one of 16 cities the Obama administration is targeting to increase the number of young people hired for summer jobs at federal workplaces, the White House said Monday.

The "summer impact hub" designation means City Hall will work more closely with federal officials to help establish summer job work sites with federal agencies and contractors in the region. The White House did not provide measurable goals associated with the program.

Baltimore's summer jobs program, YouthWorks, hires thousands of residents between 14 and 21 for summer work. The city program, organized through the Mayor's Office of Employment Development, is hoping to expand enrollment to 9,400 this year.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake earlier this month encouraged more businesses and community groups to offer jobs to young people or provide additional funding for the program.
