Gill confirmed to head Maryland business agency

The Maryland Senate confirmed R. Michael Gill on Friday as Gov. Larry Hogan's secretary of business and economic development.

The vote was 44 to 1, with Sen. Joan Carter Conway, a Baltimore city Democrat, dissenting.

Though Gill has drawn praise in business circles, Conway expressed dissatisfaction with Gill's answers to her questions about comments on diversity during his confirmation hearing. The panel delayed acting on his nomination for a week.

Hogan tapped Gill, an investment banker, in January to direct the state's economic development efforts. He was chairman of Evergreen Advisors and the founder of a technical services company, Americom, as well as a former member of Baltimore County's economic development commission.
