CLEVELAND — Former presidential candidate and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley will speak at the
Democratic National Convention as the Clinton campaign seeks to portray a message of unity in Philadelphia.
O'Malley exited the race for the nomination after placing a distant third in the Iowa caucuses earlier this year. A Clinton campaign official told The Baltimore Sun that the date and timing of O'Malley's address will be made available later.
The former governor has slowly re-emerged into public view after avoiding the media and the campaign trail for months. He endorsed Hillary Clinton in June -- after it had been clear for weeks that she had clinched the nomination -- and has since appeared for her in Iowa, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.
O'Malley was once close with the Clinton family, who campaigned for him in Maryland during his gubernatorial elections. That relationship has been difficult to assess since he announced his presidential campaign last year and frequently criticized Clinton as being too cozy with Wall Street and not representing a new generation of Democrats.
O'Malley will be the first Marylander to speak at either convention. Retired Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon Ben Carson, a longtime Maryland resident who now lives in Florida, addressed the Republican gathering in Cleveland this week.
