Longtime anchor, Marriott exec Kathleen Matthews considers run for House

Kathleen Matthews, a Marriott executive and longtime television news anchor in Washington, is planning to run in Maryland's 8th Congressional District -- a seat that will be left open next year by Rep. Chris Van Hollen, according to a report Thursday in Politico.

Matthews, 61, was an anchor of 25 years for WJLA before joining Bethesda-based Marriott International in 2006. She lives in Chevy Chase and is married to MSNBC's Chris Matthews.

A consultant told Politico that the Democrat is considering a run for the seat a day after Van Hollen announced he will run for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski next year.

News of Matthews' interest in the race came as she was traveling abroad, according to Politico. She did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Baltimore Sun.

Mikulski's decision to retire is likely to set off a shuffle among Maryland's congressional delegation as several House members consider running for the post. Van Hollen is the first to announce his candidacy, but six other House members have expressed an interest.
