Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend said in a social media post on Monday that former President George H. W. Bush told her he is planning to break with his party to support Democrat Hillary Clinton in November.
"The President told me he's voting for Hillary!!” Kennedy Townsend, a Democrat and the eldest daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, wrote on Facebook under a picture of her shaking the president's hand.
The post appears to have been removed since Politico first reported about it on Monday night. Asked by The Baltimore Sun to confirm the exchange on Tuesday, Kennedy Townsend emailed back a single sentence: "What was said was said."
There has been no love lost between the Bush family and GOP nominee Donald Trump. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush repeatedly criticized Trump during the primaries before dropping out in February. Neither President George H.W. Bush nor President George W. Bush attended the party's national convention in Cleveland this summer.
Jim McGrath, a spokesman for Bush, said in a statement that the president is not commenting on the race.
"The vote President Bush will cast as a private citizen in some 50 days will be just that: a private vote cast in some 50 days," he said.
