Former Obama administration official and Capitol Hill aide Will Jawando, who is running in Maryland's 8th Congressional District, will report raising more than $112,000 in the second quarter, his campaign said Tuesday.
Jawando will report having $97,000 on hand at the end of the quarter.
"Today's report shows that there is an appetite for new, dynamic, and inclusive leadership in Congress to tackle the significant challenges we face," Jawando, who previously worked for the White House and the U.S. Department of Education, said in a statement.
The 8th District -- an open seat next year because incumbent Rep. Chris Van Hollen is running for Senate -- has drawn several high profile candidates. Former WJLA anchor Kathleen Matthews, Sen. Jamie Raskin, Dels. Kumar Barve and Ana Sol-Gutierrez, former Montgomery County Council president Valerie Ervin are also seeking the seat.
Raskin is the only other candidate to preview his second quarters campaign finance report, which candidates must file with the Federal Election Commission by midnight Wednesday. Raskin's campaign has said he will report raising $553,000 with about $480,000 on hand.
Campaign finance numbers don't tell the whole story of a campaign's strength and lesser financed campaigns can and do win elections. But absent independent polling, fundraising numbers are one of the only directly metrics observers can review.
Jawando announced he was running in late April and filed his initial paperwork with the FEC on April 27, but said Tuesday the campaign did not actively start raising money until the end of May.
The Montgomery County-based district also includes portions of Frederick and Carroll counties and is widely considered safe for Democrats in the general election.
Jawando, a Silver Spring resident, came in fourth out of nine candidates in the 2014 primary election for a House of Delegates seat, capturing about 15 percent of the vote.
