Jamie Raskin airs ads in 8th District race

State Sen. Jamie Raskin is joining the advertising war unfolding in the pricey contest for Maryland's 8th Congressional District, launching a series of television commercials this week that portray him as the only progressive in the race for the Democratic nomination.

"They all say they're progressive," the ad's narrator says, as a shot of the Democrats running to replace Rep. Chris Van Hollen in the Montgomery County-based district is displayed. "But Jamie Raskin is the only Democrat for Congress who's authored landmark progressive laws."

The Raskin campaign unveiled three, 15-second ads Wednesday that discuss his legislative record in Annapolis (the other two deal with gun control and climate change). Their reach is not yet clear; the campaign said it had purchased airtime on broadcast television, but the contracts were not yet available.

Raskin is entering an already crowded media environment that has been blanketed by Kathleen Matthews, a former Marriott executive and WJLA anchor, and David Trone, co-owner of a national liquor retailer. Trone, Matthews and Raskin are expected to have more money to spend than any of the other candidates in the field.

The primary is April 26.
