A slew of new Maryland lawmakers will be sworn in Wednesday afternoon as the 435th session General Assembly convenes in Annapolis.
An unpredictable legislative session awaits, with a new governor to be inaugrated next week, an end to Democrats' dominance of both chambers, and the most freshman members in two decades.
Republican Gov.-elect Larry Hogan is scheduled to greet lawmakers alongside Democratic Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown, whom Hogan defeated in an upset win in November. Hogan will be sworn-in on Jan. 21.
More than 40 percent of the House of Delegates will be new to the chamber this year, along with nearly a quarter of the Senate.
Budget issues are expected to dominate the session as officials seek to close an estimated $750 million shortfall.
