Robert Maloney, one of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's top deputies, is returning to his former job in city government.
As deputy mayor for public safety, Maloney, 48, oversaw the police and fire departments, among other agencies, in addition to leading emergency operations. A career firefighter and paramedic, Maloney is returning to his former job as director of the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management.
"Serving exclusively as Emergency Manager will allow me to spend more time on preparedness plans, homeland security funding opportunities, training and coordination of city agencies," Maloney said in a statement.
He will retain his salary of $135,000, city officials said. The police and fire departments will now report to Chief of Staff Kaliope Parthemos. Maloney was one of five deputy mayors to Rawlings-Blake.
Maloney has been the director of the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management since January 2008, where he coordinated the city’s response to three blizzards and other violent storms. He has also coordinated public safety management for large events, including the Star-Spangled Spectacular. He was promoted to deputy mayor in 2013.
Maloney also has worked as the Baltimore City Fire Department chief of staff. He is a veteran of the United States Naval Reserve, where he served during a tour of active duty in Fallujah, Iraq in 2005.
