A day into House race, Trone buys airtime in D.C.

David Trone, the wealthy businessman and late entrant into the race for Maryland's 8th Congressional District, is going up early with a broadcast television ad in the Washington market.

Trone, the owner of Total Wine & More, has purchased $108,000 in airtime on Washington's WRC TV, including a slot on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday, according to a Federal Communication Commission filing made public Thursday. The campaign also made a significant purchase on WTTG.

The early ad purchase, which likely does not cover the extent of Trone's initial ad buy, comes a day after Trone announced he would run for the Democratic nomination. It underscores that the Potomac resident is prepared to spend significant sums in the race to replace to Rep. Chris Van Hollen. The Montgomery County-based seat will be left open becuase Van Hollen is running for Senate.

Multiple Democratic sources with knowledge of the ad buy said Trone's campaign would spend nearly $1 million.

Trone, 60, is joining what is already a crowded field of candidates that includes a former television news anchor and Marriott International executive, three state lawmakers and two former aides in the Obama administration, among others.

Trone's campaign was not immediately available to discuss the ad campaign.
