Occasionally, between assignments, I will wander the streets of Baltimore looking for intriguing black-and-white photographs using my iPhone. I find it very relaxing wandering around with only my iPhone… no story, no subject, just quietly walking the streets and seeing what I can capture. I look for situations that allow me to layer, lines, shapes and light into graphic images. I shoot my iPhone images in a square format, unlike the rectangular shape when I am shooting on assignment. This changes my approach to how I compose things within the frame. When looking for these images, I try to mentally strip out the color as I visualize what the scene will look like in black-and-white. Next week I will explain how I edited the image using my iPhone.
