Jurassic Quest arrives at Fairgrounds

Workers set up true-to-life-size animatronic dinosaurs, including this Spinosaurus, for Jurassic Quest, which will be open to the public from Jan. 13 -16 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds. Spinosaurus, which lived in what is now North Africa during the Late Cretaceous period more than 93 million years ago, was the largest carnivorous dinosaur.

Artist Steven Weitzman, in his Brentwood studio, has received the commission to produce a statue of civil rights activist Barbara Rose Johns. A maquette of Johns holding a book is behind him. It will replace the statue of Robert E. Lee in the lower rotunda of the Capitol  that formerly represented the state of Virginia. Johns, at age 16, led a strike for equal education in 1951 at R.R. Moton High School, an all-Black school in Farmville, VA
