The halls of Pinewood Elementary School in Timonium were alive with color, stories and imagination last week as the school PTA's Adventures in Art Committee — aided by literally hundreds of students — presented a tribute to Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel.
The homage to the Renaissance master brought together illustrations of fables and folk tales created by Pinewood students as part of the school's Adventures in Art program. In all, nearly 600 students participated.
The tribute, which took up a hallway at the Timonium school, was available for viewing from early last week through Jan. 27. The hallway was transformed into a "chapel-like" gallery, with the artistic works from floor to ceiling — and across the ceiling.
The display was augmented by glowing lights along the base, curtains and displays along the way — including a showing of books and other works about Michelangelo at the entrance to the hall.
Parents Katrina Kunkler and Bonnie Tarantino organized the project with help from the school's art teacher, Sheldon Lebowitz.
Some 30 volunteers came to the school on Jan. 23 to put all the pieces together.
