Schofield makes the 'circuit' for successful recycling day

Innovative and energetic are two of the adjectives that describe the Rodgers Forge Board of Governors.

The board inaugurated the community's Electronics Recycling Day on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Chaired by board member Janine Schofield, the event was an overwhelming success, with 6,324 pounds of electronics "dumped" off — including 29 televisions.

Janine was thrilled with the result and the "very polite and patient participants." She went on to say that Electronics Recycling Day was an outgrowth of the community's Dumpster Day, which she has long chaired.

Several residents have, no doubt, been asked to support the Polar Bear Plunge, coming up on Jan. 28.

Dumbarton Middle School students are busily seeking pledges for this annual fundraiser, which does so much to help the Maryland Special Olympics.

And speaking of a good cause, on Feb. 28, Rodgers Forge Elementary School students will once again Jump Rope for Heart — a benefit for the Heart Association. This annual fundraiser will also see students soliciting donations.

In an effort to bolster fundraising efforts at Dumbarton Middle School, parents and students have suggested a Dumbarton Alumni Association.

This nonprofit would assist the various projects and events at Dumbarton. However, much planning and organization is needed to get this started.

If you are interested in serving on the committee or would like to help with the formation, contact Robert Schuck at robertschuck@gmail.com.

Dumbarton parents are always in the forefront of school activities, and two parents — Joy Lewandowski and Sue Parts — did a terrific job of providing delicious delicacies for the American Education Week visits at Dumbarton Middle School. Thank you so much.

Now let's discuss the Dumbarton students! The Student Government was thrilled to send one of the largest delegations in recent years to the Baltimore County Student Council Leadership camp.

These representatives were: Tara Katimas, Brenton Pegues, Avery Palmer, Matt Deinlein and Kathryn Ertel.

They attended workshops on teamwork, setting goals and helping others, and other topics.

Jeanne Oswald tells us that St. Pius X School will observe Catholic Schools Week (Jan. 30-Feb. 3), with an open house on Wednesday, Feb. 1, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. All interested parents of present and future students are invited to attend.

The St. Pius X community is beaming about recent basketball victories earned by the seventh-grade girls basketball team and eighth-grade boys basketball team.

The girls' team, coached by David Gately, won the annual Monsignor Lynch Tournament. Team member Kameel Smith was named to the All-Tournament Team, and Eilish Gately was voted most valuable player.

The boys' team, coached by Gaywood's Tim Fitzgerald, won the annual Calvert Hall Kinney Classic Tournament. Team member Theo Divne was named to the All-Tournament Team and Gaywood's John Fitzgerald was voted MVP. Bravo to all!

The Maryland All State Jazz Group, Band and Orchestra have been enriched by the addition of several Towson High School students.

Hart Guonjian-Pettit and Geoffrey Palo qualified for the Jazz Group, and Emily Barone, Jasper Igusa, Ivan Mendoza and Charlotte Roulet qualified for the Band and Orchestra.

We should note that Hart is first chair lead trumpet and Emily is first chair all-state flute/piccolo player for the second year in a row!

Way to go, Hart and Emily!

Math students at Towson High also claimed much recognition recently.

The top three scorers in the Maryland Math League Contest No. 2 were Kyle King (perfect score), Andrew Bortvin and Rachel Morgan.

Top Scorers in the University of Maryland, College Park, Math Contest were Billy Wu, Matt Bender and Andrew Bortvin. We applaud you all.

Pauline Piper, the oldest living member of Brown Memorial Woodbrook Presbyterian Church, recently celebrated her 103rd birthday.

Pauline, a much beloved member, now lives in a nursing home in Williamstown, Maine. We send a big kiss and a great happy birthday to a wonderful person.

Before we get too far into 2012, we must recap some of the holiday festivities in our neighboring Gaywood. Santa's Gaywood helper, Tom Mooney, again regaled youngsters with "Ho, ho, ho's" and candy in the Gaywood Gazebo in December, with lights strung by Jim Fregetta setting a festive mood.

Crafts, hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows and donated goodies added to the festivities. It was a great afternoon, organized by Paige Fritze, Sasha Harris and Janet Wagoner, chair.

Will Phil see his shadow on Feb. 2 or not? That is the question.

Till we meet again ...
