Troop 828 Scouts, adults earn awards, advancements

Congratulations to local Scout leader Dawn Hendricks on being awarded a District Award of Merit from the Dulaney District, Boy Scouts of America.

This award is for adult scouters who have rendered service of an outstanding nature at the district level. She was presented with her award at the annual Dulaney District dinner on June 6, at the Parkville American Legion.

Dawn has served Boy Scout Troop 828 in various troop and district leadership positions with both the Boy Scouts and Venturing, including troop committee advancement chair and unit commissioner.

As the advancement chair, she coordinates both advancement for the troop and the progress of prospective Eagle Scouts, and sits in on board of review and Eagle project reviews.

Dawn and her husband, Tom, have continued to be involved in many Troop 828 events even though their son TJ, an Eagle Scout, aged out of the troop four years ago.

Together, they also serve as advisors for a HAM radio venture crew based in Owings Mills, which is involved in many district and council events as well.

In other news from Troop 828, the troop held a Court of Awards June 16 at Havenwood Presbyterian Church, which sponsors the troop.

Several boys earned rank advancements. Chance Bowersox earned the Life Scout rank while Chris Pittman was awarded both Scout First and Second Class status. Tenderfoot rank was earned by Xander Ehasz, Tom Kennedy, Craig Millin and Matthew Waters. And new Scout Anthony Ricci was welcomed to the troop.

Elections were also held for troop leadership. The new senior patrol leader is James Heuser, with Nick O'Dwyer, Chris Pittman and Eric Lundberg chosen to serve as patrol leaders.

The York Manor Swim Club Makos swim team kicked off the season against the Hampton Swim Club at home this past week, unfortunately with a loss. (Hopefully, the squad evened its record as a result of its meet at Stoneleigh Swim Club on Monday, which was too late for this edition).

Next, the Makos take on Campus Cabana Swim Club tonight (Wednesday, June 22) at home, followed by meets against Woodcroft Swim Club Monday, June 27, at home; and at Pine Ridge Swim Club on Wednesday, July 29.

The team is led by head coach Dani Korman and assistant coaches Jeni Zeiler and Andrew Hogan.

The next few weeks will be busy at the club, with a teen night Friday, June 24 and the annual Independence Day Celebration July 4. Members should consult their event calendars for more details on these events.

In my Last column, I promised more about the Lutherville-Timonium Recreation Council's academic camps, Camp SMART and Brush up Camp, so here goes:

Contact camp directors Kathy Routh at 410-321-1963 or kathyrouth@verizon.net, and Veronica Altvater at Veronica99@comcast.net — or the ltrc.org website. Sessions are held at Ridgely Middle School.

Also, Algebra Camp reviews concepts necessary for success in Algebra I, and is open to middle and high school students who will be taking Algebra I in the fall.
