Library pairs teen amateur authors with writing 'prose'

Teen writers can practice their craft at the Cockeysville Library on Wednesdays at 7 p.m., through a program that pairs members of the library's Teen Writers Club with professional writers from the Maryland Writers Association.

While working with authors and experts in the publishing field, teens can also make friends who share their love of writing.

The presentation challenges students to get a grip on their lives by making positive decisions.

Students will learn how to exercise self-control when they are confronted with negative influences — such as drugs, alcohol, cyber-bullying — or when they experience feelings of frustration or anger.

One of the goals of the assembly is to help students understand that positive self control leads to satisfying relationships, academic success and positive feelings about one's self and others.

Residents of Mercy Ridge played hosts to children from St. Vincent's Villa recently.

The children came in Halloween costumes — despite the scary weather of snow/sleet and slush — and conducted their trick or treating while residents, armed with bowls of candy, lined the lobby from the front door to the dining area.

The children were able to see the staff's annual pumpkin carving artistic endeavors — some of the works included pumpkins carved into a piggy bank, a tea set and a sequined black cat, to name a few.

Many thanks are due to the staff who made the afternoon's events possible, and especially to organizers Sara Wyatt and Lauren Stewart for their help.

Happy Thanksgiving wishes to everyone, especially my family (who will all be home for the holiday) and friends, both near and far.

Despite of the troubles that we see around us in the world, there is much to be thankful for. Let's take a moment to offer our appreciation for those who have touched our lives in some special way, and for the joy of time spent with loved ones.
