Cockeysville: St. Joseph School students, staff embrace the bustle of fall season

The students and staff at St. Joseph's School on Church Lane are "fall"-ing into the spirit of the season with many activities to benefit their community.

On Oct. 21, they will donate gently used jeans to St. Vincent DePaul Center as part of "denim day," and the seventh-graders will be tying the donations into a class lesson — a charting exercise.

Meanwhile, middle school clubs at St. Joseph's are in full swing, with cooking, robotics and a production club leading the way. The students are also hoping to start a news program.

As a special activity, many of the staff and students will walk in the sixth annual Brain Injury Awareness Scarecrow Classic Walk and Run on Oct. 30, inEllicott City.

This event helps to fund the services provided for individuals with brain injuries. It's a cause close to the hearts of those in the St. Joseph community, since one of their former students and current resident, Matthew Slattery, is continuing to recover from injuries sustained in a severe accident. Matthew is doing well and will be confirmed this spring with his class. What great news!

If you are interested in attending the Scarecrow Classic, or wish to obtain further information on the organization and ways to help, contact Suzanne Kantt at 410-448-2924 kantt@biamd.org.

Barry and Trudy Balzanna of Cranbrook Road, pass along the news that their dear Siberian husky, Blazer, passed away last month. Blazer was a gentle fixture in the area, and many of the neighbors would stop and spend time petting and "conversing" with dear Blazer during his walks throughout the day. His sweet countenance and gentle nature will be missed.

A reminder that on Friday, Oct. 21, Baltimore County Public Schools are closed, due to a staff development day.
