Bryn Holmes' league coaching debut at Gilman was a roaring success.
Gilman topped visiting Calvert Hall, 40-27, in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference match Wednesday night.
The Greyhounds received pins from Connor Webb (220 pounds), Ty Washburn (152) and Brandon Smith (170) to help them prevail.
Washburn's pin of senior Max Jones in 2:53 was significant and surprising.
"At the beginning of the night, he was going to wrestle JV," Holmes said of the sophomore. "And I said, 'Let's bump him up.' He goes out and pins the kid. That was huge for us."
Gilman jumped out to a 12-0 lead as Webb recorded a pin and Brian Gaia (285) gained a forfeit.
The Cardinals trimmed the advantage to 12-6 on Evan Zoppo's pin at 106 before Gilman's Jack King (113) scored an 18-4 decision over Collin DeMatt.
But Calvert Hall prevailed in four of the next five matches to go ahead, 24-19. Bruce Nguyen (138) capped the stretch by edging Will Realo, 2-1.
However, not much went the Cardinals' way for the rest of the match. Gilman took four of the final five bouts with the decisive points coming on pins from Washburn and Smith and a forfeit by Shane Cockrill.
