Pleasant Plains PTA to host annual Fall Festival on Oct. 1

The Pleasant Plains Elementary School PTA will host its annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 8300 Pleasant Plains Road.

The event features arts and crafts, games, face painting, food and a Punt, Pass and Kick competition. Admission is free, and all are welcome.

Calvert Hall trio named National Merit semifinalists

Three Calvert Hall College High School students have been recognized as semifinalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

Seniors Nicholas Fleming, Patrick McQuay and Jesse Morrison have been selected and will compete for some 8,300 scholarships worth more than $34 million next spring.

Also at Calvert Hall, the following students were cited as Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship organization: Matthew Anderson, Daniel Gonzalez, Thomas Gruebl, Curtis Hughey, Kyle Sutton, Connor Way, Benjamin Weise, Alexander Wilson and Daniel Zile.

In addition, Gruebl and Charles Urrutia were honored by the National Hispanic Recognition Program.

Cockeysville Middle to receive $25,000 sweepstakes prize

Cockeysville Middle School Principal Deborah Magness is scheduled to receive $25,000 on Wednesday, Sept. 28, from Discover Financial Services as part of the company's Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes promotion.

The donation is being made possible by Shahin Sajedi, a parent of a former student at Cockeysville Middle. By using her credit card for a purchase, she won the cash in a contest in June. The sweepstakes awarded $25,000 to Sajedi and another $25,000 to the public school of her choosing – she selected Cockeysville Middle.

The presentation is scheduled to take place at the Sam's Club in Timonium. The school will use the unexpected funds to help support existing technology and purchase new technology.

School system's online survey seeks community input

Baltimore County Public Schools is inviting the public to participate in an online "Stakeholder Satisfaction Survey," designed to allow students, parents and community members throughout the county to provide feedback to the school system on various topics.

The survey is available online only, through Oct. 14, at http://www.bcps.org. Those needing assistance accessing the Internet may do so via computers in BCPS schools and at county public libraries.

Notre Dame Prep's annual fall festival set for Oct. 22

Notre Dame Preparatory School, 815 Hampton Lane, will host its fall festival at the school's Sports and Fitness Center, on Saturday, Oct. 22, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event includes vendors, children's activities, magic acts, mascots, and a wine tasting.
