Swimming: Loyola cruises past Mount St. Joseph

Loyola Blakefield coach Keith Schertle disliked his team's performance when the Dons swam against Mount St. Joseph last year.

"I wrote on my practice pad, 'waste of time'," Schertle said of what he showed team a day after the meet. "We just didn't swim well."

Schertle had no problems this time, though, after Loyola thumped visiting Mount St. Joseph, 98-67, in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference opener for both schools Thursday.

After all, the Dons — winners of 18 straight league championships — finished first in all but one out of a combined 11 individual and relay events.

"I thought we did well," said Schertle, whose team hasn't lost a league match since 2007. "I told them 'I wasn't disappointed in our performance. I was just not elated.' Sometimes, they take it as a disappointment, but it was not meant to be one."

Senior Cameron James led the Dons, winning the 100-yard (48.68) and 200-yard (1:45.87) freestyles.

Kevin Blum (1st, 100 breaststroke, 100.75, 2nd, 200 individual medley, 201.50), Thomas Brennan (1st, 100 butterfly, 53.40), Kendrick McDonald (1st, 200 IM, 2:01.34), John Clancy (2nd, 100 fly, 53:76) and Zachary Hoelting (2nd, 500 free, 4:52.74, 3rd, 200 free, 1:48.75) also shined for the Dons.

Junior Andrew McKissick won the 500 free for St. Joe in 4:48.13 while freshman Andrew Sanchez had a standout debut, finishing second in the 50 free (23:09) and third in the 100 free (1:42.53).

The Gaels' relay team of Sanchez, Ben Dean, David Bracken and Jonathan Hulbert placed second in the 200 medley relay. The group's time of 1:42.53 ranked among the top-10 in school history.
