Perryville commissioners vote to write-off $9,000 in uncollectable taxes

The Town of Perryville will write off property taxes it hasn't been able to collect from several defunct businesses — about $9,000. The money, however, will be offset, and then some, by the town's burgeoning casino revenue.

Perryville's town commissioners voted Tuesday to have the uncollectable property taxes and penalties taken off the town accounting books, Town Administrator Denise Breder wrote in an e-mail Wednesday. The majority of the taxes were from businesses and corporations that had shut down their operations.

During December's work session, Breder had said writing off the taxes would not prevent the town from continuing its attempt to collect the money; however, it would provide a more accurate accounting of the town's financial records.

The town commissioners also voted to send a $20,000 contribution to the Community Fire Company of Perryville, with a recommendation that the money be used to expand the company's EMS driver operation.

The money came from the Hollywood Casino Perryville local impact grant revenue and is over and above the town's budgeted contribution for fiscal year 2012, which was $30,000 to the fire company and $2,000 for fire and police protection.

Budget amendments

Several budget amendments were also approved Tuesday, according to Breder.

The amendments include $15,000 in additional legal costs to cover projected expenses through the end of the fiscal year in June, another $10,000 to cover the town's insurance deductible and $16,000 to cover additional construction expenses for a project at 550 Otsego St.

Other business

Lester Roane, who owns property outside the town limits, will be able to connect to Perryville's water supply system.

Commissioners approved an agreement with Roane, which will allow him to be hooked up to the town's water, according to Breder. Roane had submitted the request during December's work session.

The town commissioners also approved the reappointment of Community Fire Company of Perryville Chief Ray Ryan to the town's planning commission.
