Perryville advances in regional softball

The Perryville Little League Softball All-Stars closed out pool play Wednesday with a exciting, 7-6, come-from-behind win over previously unbeaten New Jersey in East Region Mid-Atlantic Tournament action inBristol, Conn.

Perryville, which trailed 3-0 early, rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the win.

The victory earned Perryville a shot in the Mid-Atlantic semifinals and a rematch with New Jersey. New Jersey finished 3-1 and is the top seed, while Perryville finishes 2-2 and is the fourth seed. The two will play at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Second seed Pennsylvania, also 3-1, will play third seed New York (2-2) at 11 a.m. Thursday. Winners will meet for the Mid-Atlantic title, Friday at 5 p.m., while losers are eliminated.

Perryville's winning effort came with two outs in the final inning.

Trailing 6-4, Kaitlyn Griffin walked with one out. Lacie Flores then reached on an error by the New Jersey third baseman, but a strikeout followed for the second out with runners still at first and second.

Emily Phillips then walked to load the bases, and Kyleigh Knell also walked to force in a run.

The next batter, Ellen Little, reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Flores and Phillips to score the tying and winning runs.

Lydia Hill earned the win for Perryville in relief of starter Philips and reliever Virginia Lewis. All three Perryville pitchers worked two innings apiece, keeping each available for Thursday's semifinal game.
