The Aberdeen Eagles rolled through the IAABO's prestigious girls basketball holiday tournament this week, winning three straight games by 20 points or more, including a 48-point margin in the final game to win the tournament at Prince George's Community College.
The Havre de Grace Warriors girls didn't fare as well, losing to Patterson Mill Wednesday in the first round of a holiday tournament at Fallston.
Aberdeen defeated the Dr. Henry A. Wise Pumas, 89-33, Wednesday night in the championship game of the 39th annual holiday tournament, winning their first championship in the event in 13 years.
Aberdeen and the Pumas, from Upper Marlboro, were unbeaten until the title game..
Brionna Jones, Aberdeen's junior center, who was named the tournament's MVP, led the Eagles in scoring. She scored 30 in the championship game, averaged 23.7 points per game and finished with 71 in the three games. Jones had 13 rebounds in the championship game.
Nia Alleyne had 15 points and five rebounds in the victory. Lakeia Hayden scored 14 points. T.K. Fowlkes scored 12 points and Jimmia McCluskey had 11.
One day prior to their title-game victory, the Eagles advanced to the title game with a 50-30 win Tuesday over South Lakes of Virginia.
Jones scored 23 points, had 12 rebounds and blocked five shots, all team highs.
Alleyne scored 11, had five rebounds and two assists. Fowlkes scored eight points, had 10 rebounds and blocked a shot.
Kierra Palmer led the Eagles with six assists and blocked one shot. Hayden had two assists.
Aberdeen easily beat Eleanor Roosevelt, 58-24, in Monday's opening round.
Jones led the Eagles in three categories, scoring 18 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking two shots.
Alleyne had 11 points, three assists and one block. Najea Norton scored seven points for the Eagles.
McCluskey and Erica Jones both had three rebounds for Aberdeen. Destiny Cole had two assists. Palmer blocked one shot.
The Eagles, who outscored their three opponents, 190-87, in the tournament, are 8-0.
