7th annual memorial softball games this weekend

This weekend brings the 7th Annual Forton-Lee Memorial Softball games are coming back to Havre de Grace.

The softball games, scheduled for Saturday starting at 10 a.m., raise money to benefit the Forton-Lee Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund was established in memory of Willie Lee and Ashley Forton, two Havre de Grace teenagers who died in car accidents in 2003 and 2004, respectively, according to a letter from fundraiser organizer and Willie's mother, Kennon Lee.

Both were 15 years old at the time and were in cars driven by other teenagers.

The Forton-Lee fund, sponsored by the SMILES organization, was started seven years ago to raise money for Havre de Grace graduates, as well as awareness for safe, teen driving.

The softball game, Lee said Thursday, was thought up by a friend of Ashley's and Willie's because of their connection to the sport.

"Ashley played softball [and] Willie was very involved in baseball," Lee said. "It was kind of a sport that both of them were involved in."

This year three games will be played at Tomahawk Field at Havre de Grace High School, at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The teams playing include one with Mayor Wayne Dougherty, members of the city council and department heads, as well as a team from the Havre de Grace Police Department, Lee said.

There will also be a team from the Harford County Sheriff's Office, one of firefighters and two teams of students, family and friends.

To raise money, team members and spectators alike can simply donate to the fund or buy base hits, home runs and even outs. Baskets will also be raffled off during the game, Lee added.

"It kind of throws some fun in the game," she said. "It's not just straight softball."
