Farmers market, line dancing and yard sales on horizon in HdG

Saturday morning for the Havre de Grace Farmers Market, 450 Pennington Ave. Booths are set up by 9 a.m. to noon. How about some local corn on the cob from the farmer's market for an extra nutritious treat? Did you know that corn is the largest crop of the USA with its origins in Mexico?

Leaving the farmers market, stop by the Havre de Grace Visitor Center to purchase your special edition 2013 John O'Neill medallion, commemorating the War of 1812 local hero, to benefit the Havre de Grace Arts Commission. Medallions cost $10; reserve yours at 410-939-2100.

Alla Bradley informed me that Bill Braun will teach line dancing at the American Legion Post 47, 501 St. John St., 410-939-0234, on Thursdays, 6 to 10 p.m. A donation of $10 includes instruction, dancing, beer and water.

Monday is Women's Equality Day. Established by Congress in 1971, this day honors the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, giving women the vote.

The Grace Place Serving Center will host a free, hot meal luncheon, Aug. 27 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 114 N. Union Ave., 410-939-2101 to anyone in need who enters.

A shopping opportunity for bargains is coming Sept. 21 (raindate Sept. 22). The Havre de Grace Community-wide Yard Sale. Advertised in national publications, Antique Week and Antique Trader, this is our 11th sale. Set up in your own home, yard or business. Everyone mark the calendar to shop that date for bargains. The Friends of the Concord Point Lighthouse have a new fundraising venture to purchase a brick on the legacy walkway leading from the lighthouse to the O'Neill cannon, commemorating family, friends or loved ones ($100).
