From the Friends of the Concord Point Lighthouse Wickie newsletter, I learned there will be a presentation about women lighthouse keepers at the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum July 25 at 7 p.m. Women keepers have a long history throughout the USA and especially along the Chesapeake Bay. The Concord Point Lighthouse had a female keeper after John O'Neill Jr. died in 1863. His wife, Esther, became the official keeper with a substantial raise to $500 annually. Esther's son-in-law, Gabriel, is listed as keeper in the 1870 census; however, it is likely that she may have been still performing the duties as keeper, and the census taker just assumed that the male in the house was responsible. Once again, Esther is listed as keeper in the 1880 census at the age of 83!

Terri Glenn clued us about events at the Havre de Grace Senior Activity Center, Lewis Lane, 410-939-5121: fitness orientation (July 20, 11:30 a.m.); blood pressure screening (July 25, 10 a.m.); county advisory board ice cream social (July 25, 12:30 p.m.); bingo (July 27, 1 p.m.); and lighthouse cafe (July 30, 9:30 a.m.).

Helen Cayer notified me that the Olney Theatre National Players will present the "Complete Works of Shakespeare" (abridged), July 29 at 5 p.m. at the Concord Point Lighthouse lawn in Havre de Grace. Bring chairs, blankets, picnics and enjoy the beautiful waterfront, promenade and three local museums open until 5 p.m. Free parking on the grounds of the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum. No rain date or relocation.

Shakespeare's plays are witty, comical and entertaining. "The Complete Works of Shakespeare" (abridged) recreates the bare bones of his plots all laid out in a fast moving, amusing parody. This production ran nine years in London, now in Havre de Grace, courtesy of the Havre de Grace Arts Commission, 410-939-2100 or 410-939-5544.
