On July 10, 1864, Maj. Harry Gilmor's Confederate Cavalry camped in a building (an old stagecoach headquarters that still stands) at Mountain Road and Old Joppa Road. The cavalry raided nearby villages such as Jerusalem Mill for provisions, on its way to burn the PWB (Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore) Railroad Bridge across the Gunpowder River, where Gilmor captured Union Gen. W. B. Franklin.

The attack on this bridge temporarily broke the railroad link between Havre de Grace and Baltimore and points south during the Civil War.
