Havre de Grace teen charged with setting fire to his grandparents' home

A Havre de Grace teenager was charged with arson Wednesday after allegedly setting fire to his grandparents' home.

Around 10:12 a.m. Wednesday, firefighters were dispatched to a fire inside a townhouse in the 400 block of Battery Drive in Havre de Grace, according to a news release from the State Fire Marshal's Office.

Members of the Susquehanna Hose Company quickly extinguished the flames, but not before the fire caused about $1,500 in damage.

Personnel found no working smoke alarms during the on-scene investigation, according to the release.

Investigators believe the 13-year-old boy ignited the curtains in his bedroom while playing with matches, according to the release.

The boy was charged with first-degree arson and second-degree malicious burning and the charges will be referred to Harford County Juvenile Services, according to the release.

He was released to the custody of his grandparents, who were not identified in the release.
