The Havre de High School Hall of Fame Committee Wednesday announced the six people it has chosen for the Hall of Fame's second class that will be inducted in October.

The class includes brother and sister physicians who were also active in local politics, a leader of Maryland's legal profession, a retired financial manager who has become a top fiscal advisor to Harford County government, a late educator who served on the Harford County Board of Educator and a retired undertaker who also happens to be one of Havre de Grace's most well known residents of the past 60 years.


Induction ceremonies will be held on Friday, Oct. 7th at 10 a.m. at the school. Inductees will also be recognized at the Homecoming Football game that evening.

The Havre de Grace High School Hall of Fame was established last year, which its first class was inducted.

The 2011 inductees are:

Rose Mary Hatem Bonsack, M.D. (Class of 1951) - Rose Mary Hatem Bonsack has been a member of the medical profession for the past 50-plus years. Her medical experience includes serving as a physician and later chief at the outpatient clinic and chief, Department of Hospital Clinics at Kirk Army Hospital at Aberdeen Proving Ground. She has been a contract physician for the Harford County Health Department; Quality Assurance Reviewer for nursing homes in Harford County for Maryland Licensing Division; Utilization Review Officer at Harford Memorial Hospital; Medical Director at Father Martin's Ashley Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center; Member, Medical Advisory Board, Department of Motor Vehicles; Member, Harford County Mental Health and Addictions Advisory Committee; and Executive Secretary and member, Board of Physician Quality Assurance. Dr. Bonsack still operates a limited Family Medicine practice in Aberdeen. In addition, she is presently a member of the Medical & Chirurgical Faculty of the Maryland Medical Society, Harford County Medical Society (first female President in 1968), Maryland Academy of Family Physicians (first female President in 1988) and the American Academy of Family Physicians. In 1991, Dr. Bonsack was the first female physician to be elected to the Maryland State Legislature. During her tenure in Annapolis she served as Vice Chairman of the Rules Committee and as a member of many committees including the Environmental Matters Committee; Ways and Means Committee; Subcommittee on Aberdeen Proving Grounds Hazardous Waste Control, Special Committee on Health Policy; and Children, Families and Health Committee. While serving as a physician and delegate, Dr. Bonsack has been actively involved in several community organizations including Northern Maryland Heart Association (President, 1970); American Cancer Society; Mann House, Board of Directors (President, 1980- 1982); Boys and Girls Club of Harford County Board of Directors; and Harford Community College Board of Trustees. She currently serves on the Shock Trauma Board of Directors at the University of Maryland Medical System, the Family and Community Medicine Development Advisory Council through the Family Medicine Department of the University of Maryland Hospital and as a Corporator at St. Joan of Arc Church. The many honors and awards received by Dr. Bonsack include Commendations by the Army for Sustained High Quality Performance as Physician, Outpatient Department, Kirk Army Hospital; Citation by the Havre de Grace Rotary for Service Above Self; Citation by the Harford County Medical Society for Outstanding Community Service; Certificate of Achievement, University of Maryland Medical System for legislation to promote more family physicians (Outstanding Legislator Award); Woman of Distinction Award from the Soroptimist of Bel Air International and the Regional Soroptimist International; Outstanding Women - Top 100 in the State of Maryland; Lifetime Achievement Award - Maryland Academy of Family Physicians; recognition as a Harford County Living Treasure; and recognition from the American Medical Association for Outstanding 50 Years of Service.

Frederick J. Hatem, M.D. (Class of 1943) – The late Frederick Hatem earned degrees from Georgetown University and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. In 1952, he started a family practice in Aberdeen. His practice grew rapidly to the point where he saw as many as 70 patients in one day and delivered 130 babies during his final year of family practice. Dr. Hatem decided to leave his family practice and became a full time obstetrician. Once again, his practice grew rapidly and he delivered as many as 400 babies in one year and over 10,000 before the end of his career. He was elected President of the Harford County Medical Society in 1955. In 1956, one week before his 30th birthday, he was elected to the first of a total of eight terms as President and Chief of Staff at Harford Memorial Hospital. Dr. Hatem served in the Army from April, 1945 through October, 1946. In addition, he was very active in the State Medical Society, serving as Chairman of the Policy and Planning Committee as well as Chairman of the independent Maryland Medical Political Action Committee. During this same period, Dr. Hatem coached and managed in Little League and served as institutional representative for the Boy Scout Troop at St. Patrick's Church. Dr. Hatem died June 6 of this year.

Harry S. Johnson (Class of 1972) - Harry Johnson is a practicing attorney with the firm of Whiteford Taylor Preston, LLP in Baltimore. He earned his degrees from the University of Maryland and the University of Maryland School of Law. As an attorney, Harry has served as counsel to major manufacturers in cases involving exposure to various elements environmentally and occupationally. He has represented physicians and medical providers in medical negligence litigation; various products manufacturers in personal injury litigation, ranging from medical devices to power tools and automotive components; Baltimore City Council in 2003 redistricting process; and Baltimore City in civil rights lawsuit concerning redevelopment of public housing. Harry's related professional experience includes being a member of the ABA Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary, the ABA Committee on Education, the ABA House of Delegates, the Maryland State Bar Foundation Board of Directors, the Attorney Grievance Commission Review Panel, the Eighth Judicial Circuit Character Committee, the MSBA Board of Governors, the Special Committee on Continuing Legal Education, and Special Committee on Drug Crisis and Underfunding of the Court System in Baltimore City. Additionally, he has served as Treasurer and President of the Maryland State Bar Association. In the area of public service, Harry has been a member of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Merit Selection Panel, Appellate Courts Nominating Commission, Trial Courts Nominating Commission, U.S. Magistrate Judge Review Panel, Governor's Commission on the Death Penalty and the Committee to Retain the Sitting Judges. Harry's civic involvement includes being a member of the Board of Trustees, Greater Baltimore Medical Center; Board of Trustees, Center Stage; Board of Trustees, Baltimore Community Foundation; Board of Directors, BDC Development Corporation; Board of Directors, The Chapman Funds; Board of Directors, Afro American Newspapers; Executive Board, Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts; and he was a member, President and Chairman of the Board, Community College of Baltimore Foundation. Currently, he is serving as President of the Board at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Harry has been honored as the recipient of numerous awards including the Charlie Dorsey Mentor Award, Bar Association of Baltimore City; Top Black Lawyers in America, Black Enterprise Magazine; Freedom's First Award, Monumental City Bar Association; Distinguished Alumni Award, University of Maryland School of Law Black Law Students Association; and the Founder's Award, Monumental City Bar Association.

Robert L. Johnson (Class of 1944) – Robert "Bob" Johnson attended the University of Delaware where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and the first Master of Business Administration degree awarded by the University. In addition, he has studied at Penn State University and Cornell, and is a graduate of the Finance School and the Management Engineering Training Center of the U.S. Army. He is also a graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National Defense University. An Army veteran of World War II, Bob served in the Southwest Pacific campaign for the liberation of Luzon, Philippine Islands and performed duties in the occupation of Japan. He was recalled to active duty in 1950 and served during the Korean Conflict. Bob amassed over 50 years of federal government service. In 1977, he retired after serving 27 years as Comptroller, Financial Manager and Director of Resource Management of Aberdeen Proving Ground. His responsibilities included the budget, finance, accounting, manpower and industrial and management engineering for APG. Among his other contributions, Bob sponsored the development of an accounting and management intern training program for the installation that was adopted throughout the Department of the Army. For its leadership during his tenure, APG was designated a model installation and was awarded the Army Installation of Excellence Award. Bob has served as a guest lecturer on financial management at the U.S. Army Management Staff College and the U.S. Army Logistics Management College. A special highlight of his government service occurred when he was a member of a study group for President Nixon's Blue Ribbon Defense Panel covering Defense Planning, Programming and Budgeting. Bob's other government and community service includes serving on the Harford County Budget Advisory Board (Chairman); Special Fiscal and Budget Review Commission Board (Chairman); Planning Advisory Board; Adequate Public Facilities Committee; Sheriff's Citizens Advisory Committee; Futures Commission; Special Commission on Education; Funding, Efficiency and Accountability; Secondary Education Advisory Group (Chairman); Harford Community College Accounting Curriculum Committee; Salvation Army Advisory Board; and the Finance Committee and Advisory Board of St. Patrick's Church. Bob continues to work as a Management Consultant and Financial Advisor. He is a founding member of the Board and Treasurer of the Army Alliance, Inc. and a member of the Northeast Maryland Technology Council. Bob was a director on the Board of Columbian Federal Savings Bank and Cecil Bancorp. He served as a Management Consultant to the Harford County Public Schools as the Program Coordinator for the establishment of a Science and Math Academy partnership between the Department of Defense (APG) and Harford County. Bob has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the Baltimore Federal Executive Board Outstanding Supervisor; Department of the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Medal; Department of the Army Commander's Civilian Service Medal; Clifford R. Gross Award for outstanding Federal Public Service; Baltimore Regional Council of Government's Partnership Award for Excellence in Regional Leadership; Presidential Citation from the City of Baltimore; citations from the Harford County Executive and County Council; and three Maryland Governor's Citations; Army Superior Achievement Medal; and the University of Delaware Alumni of Excellence Award. Finally, he is the recipient of two Presidential Letters of Recognition from the President of the United States.

George D. Lisby (Class of 1949, Havre de Grace Colored High School) - After graduating from high school at the age of 14, the late George Lisby earned his Bachelor's degree at Bowie State Teachers College. He received his MA degree from North Carolina Central at the age of 18 and additional credits from the Johns Hopkins University. A longtime educator, Mr. Lisby began his teaching career in 1953 as a sixth grade teacher in Dorchester County. He returned to Harford County in 1956, taught at Havre de Grace Consolidated School, now known as Roye/Williams Elementary School and later served as assistant principal at William Paca/Old Post Road Elementary School. Mr. Lisby joined the Maryland State Department of Education in 1971 as the regional specialist and then as director of the state's Chapter 1 Program-a federally funded program to teach reading and math to low-income elementary school children. In 1987, Mr. Lisby was appointed to the Harford County Board of Education and served as President for the 1991-92 school year. In 1995, he received the prestigious Charles W. Willis Award from the Maryland Association of Boards of Education given to the board member who best exemplifies the spirit of service to youth. Another recognition of Mr. Lisby's life and achievements occurred on June 11, 1999, when the George D. Lisby Elementary School at Hillsdale in Aberdeen was dedicated in his memory.

Madelyn Mitchell Shank (Class of 1945) - Madelyn Mitchell Shank attended Eckles School of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia and graduated in 1948. She was one of the first women in Maryland to receive her Funeral Director's license in 1950 which she maintained for 50 years until her retirement in 2000. Shank has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Havre de Grace for the past 65 years. She was the first woman to serve on the Church Session and has also served on numerous committees in the Presbyterian Church. Also, for the past 65 years, Shank has dedicated herself to numerous community activities. She was a charter member of the Havre de Grace Soroptimist International where she remained active for 26 years. Beginning in 1971, along with two of her best friends, Shank organized and co-chaired the Candlelight Tour of Historic Havre de Grace for 10 years. For the last nine years, she has continued to serve on the committee in various capacities. In 1986, Shank joined the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum as a charter member and has served on the Board of Directors since 1987. She has served as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Annual Decoy Festival for the 28 years. In addition, Shank was appointed to the volunteer board of the The R. Madison Mitchell Endowment Trust which has raised over $700,000 to benefit the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum. For the past 10 years, she has organized and volunteered at the silent auction booth at the annual Duck Fair. Shank has also served on boards of directors of The Susquehanna Museum of Havre de Grace at the Lockhouse.
