McDonogh's Ashley Spivey is no longer the only 2011 Gatorade Player of the Year from the area after Gilman's Andrew Harris was named the winner of the boys version of the award Wednesday, according to Gilman athletic director Tim Holley.
Spivey, who led the Eagles to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference, was named the girls winner last month. The star striker will attend the University of Maryland on a soccer scholarship.
She totaled 85 goals and 57 assists in her sparkling four-year career with the Eagles, who captured the last two A Conference crowns.
Harris, a goalie, posted 15 shutouts for the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference finalists. The Wake Forest recruit's 13 whitewashes in 2010 — including a 1-0 victory in the championship match against archrival McDonogh — marked the Greyhounds' first title since 1995.
He was invited to a U.S. under-18 national team camp in December and is the starting keeper on the Baltimore Bays club team.
Harris is also an ESPNHS Fall All-American who blanked McDonogh for 240 minutes before finally surrendering a goal to Matt Linardi in the 2011 A Conference final in the third minute of the first overtime period.
