Girls basketball: McDonogh routs Roland Park

Leave it to McDonogh to rain on another team's parade. In this game against Roland Park, call it a downpour.

The Eagles led by 12 points midway through the second quarter and after a brief letdown late in the period that allowed the Reds to cut the lead to six, they cruised to a 65-36 victory over Roland Park in a Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference game Friday night.

McDonogh improved to 19-1 overall and 11-0 in league play.

"It was kind of a typical game for us," Eagles' coach Brad Rees said. "We come out and kind of struggle in the first half and are not very patient offensively and have some lapses defensively. Then in the third quarter, we come out and clamp down defensively."

McDonogh did just that on the Reds (11-8, 6-4), forcing four six turnovers in the first four minutes of the third quarter. The tenacious defense allowed the Eagles to go on a 9-0 run as Danielle Edwards had five points during that stretch.

Roland Park only scored two points in the quarter. The Eagles led 51-28 after three periods.

"We just got on a roll in the third quarter," said Rees, whose also team beat Roland Park, 39-31, on Jan. 9. "We will probably see the again in the playoffs and it will be a game."

McDonogh senior guard Taylor Cummings scored a game-high 21 rebounds. Two days earlier, she had a triple double in a 66-49 conquest of Archbishop Spalding, totaling 11 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists.

Tiersa Winder chipped in 17 points for the winners against Roland Park and teammate Hannah Rees added eight points.

Senior guard Daisy Alaeze led the Reds with 19 points, 11 rebounds and four steals while Beth Kelly finished with seven points.
