Friends coach Nick Gill worried that his team would suffer a letdown Thursday against visiting Baltimore Lutheran of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland C Conference.
After all, Friends blanked A Conference foe Mount de Sales, 1-0, two days earlier.
There was no sign of a Friends letdown.
The Quakers pitched another shutout, routing Lutheran, 6-0, behind the two-goal, three-assist performance of sophomore midfielder Eliza Harris.
"We didn't want to take a step back after we beat Mount De Sales," said Gill, whose team plays in the B Conference. "That was really the focus coming in."
Indeed. Friends showed plenty of intensity in the opening minutes, peppering senior goalie Lizz Bott (six saves) with six shots in eight minutes.
After relentless pressure, the Quakers finally broke through midway through the half with Harris scoring back-to-back goals 1:22 apart.
Laney Mathias, a senior striker, made it 4-0 — the halftime score — by finding the back of the goal twice in the final seven minutes.
"We let them get through on the backside and that's how they scored several of their goals," Lutheran coach Larry Surock said. "They also were strong in the air and had several head shots that just missed wide. So we dodged a bullet there."
Grace Hand and Amy Lieber added second-half goals.
