Holton-Arms coach Kim Mathias said her team has a lot of firepower.
Bryn Mawr learned that tough lesson Thursday afternoon at Ice World in Abingdon.
Holton-Arms, of Bethesda, overwhelmed Bryn Mawr, 14-1, behind the five-goal performance of sophomore forward Blair Greenwald.
"They clearly are all good skaters," Bryn Mawr assistant coach Delbert Adams said of the Panthers. "They have a lot of depth. I told our girls, 'It's a long season. It's a journey. We are rebuilding."
The games between the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League rivals have been closer in recent seasons. The squads met in the championship game the last two seasons with both games being decided by a two goals or less.
Of course, the most recent meeting was different.
The score could have been worse for Bryn Mawr if not for the effort of junior goalie Stuart Ferrell, who made 22 saves, including a few on breakaways.
Holton-Arms (3-0) scored three times in the first seven minutes. Greenwald had two goals during that stretch.
The Panthers boosted their lead to 5-0 by the end of the 15-minute first period and added five more goals in the second.
Bryn Mawr (2-1) didn't record a shot on goal until nearly nine minutes had elapsed. It came from Lindsay Hexter.
The Panthers outshot Bryn Mawr, 35-7. Sarah Lowenstein scored for Bryn Mawr.
