Winning back-to-back games means something to Friends coach Bill Pace.
The Quakers have done it only twice in the last seven seasons.
Friends made it two straight victories when the team posted a 62-50 win over Archbishop Curley Thursday night in the Hoops for Habitat Holiday Tournament at Park School.
The Quakers badly wanted some good news after entering the tournament with a 2-7 record.
"It's a momentum builder for us," Pace said. "We need to put some wins together. We have had a tough year. We were emotionally beat up and the effort level hasn't been there."
Senior Warner Mason led Friends to the title. The 6-foot-7 center earned MVP honors by totaling 10 points and nine rebounds against Curley and scoring 13 points and grabbing nine rebounds in a 80-72 semifinal win over Park.
"He is big and that intimidates players," Pace said. "He just turned 17 in September so he is younger than a lot of my juniors."
Friends junior point guard Brandon Jones scored a game-high 17 points versus Curley. Jones and his teammates had to sweat the victory out.
The Quakers led 32-18 half time, but the Friars opened the third quarter with a 16-4 run over the first 6:38 to trim the advantage to two points.
Dan Warren's three-pointer, however, late in the period seemed to give Friends a spark.
The Quakers began the final quarter with a 8-0 run to go ahead 45-35. Curley cut the lead to 47-46 on a pair of Ricardo Johnson free throws, but Friends sank nine of 12 from the line down the stretch to prevail.
Ben Huff paced Curley with 15 points and teammate Haywood Highsmith chipped in 14.
Donovan Tilley (10 points), Avery Filer (9), Warren (8), Mason Tebula (4) and Kamil Eason (4) also scored for Friends.
