Govans Library closing for technology upgrades

The Govans Library is closing for much of November for technology upgrades and remodeling - including 28 new computers, remote Internet access, new furniture and new circulation and reference desks.

Much of the work is being done to make the library branch user-friendly for children, city officials say.

The library, 5714 Bellona Ave., at York Road, is scheduled to close Friday, Nov. 4, and reopen Monday, Nov. 28, said Roswell Encina, spokesman for the city's Enoch Pratt Free Library system.

Employees will be reassigned temporarily to other library branches, said Jessica Brown, the children's librarian.

The library now has five computers. After the upgrade, the branch will have 20 computers for the public and a bank of eight for children, as well as related desks, chairs and other furniture, Encina said.

The aging building will be rewired, partly to make it wi-fi accessible, Encina said.

The building will also gain a new circulation desk, as well as two new reference desks, one just for children, he said.

The book drop will remain open while the library is closed. Library patrons are encouraged to visit other area branches, including those in Roland Park, Hampden, Northwood and Waverly.

The cost of the project was not immediately known.
