Members of the West Laurel Swim Team, the Wahoos, have been swimming their fins off since May. Coaches Dave Floyd, Luanne Myers, Matt Harris and Courtney Gaddi have been getting the swimmers ready for 2011 summer competition. Swimmers range from itty bitty to high school seniors. Go Wahoos!
The Fourth of July is right around the corner. Independence Day is a holiday that we can all share in this country. It's a day to remember our unity and our spirit.
As a community, let's show our support for our troops by flying a flag in our front yards. Buy an inexpensive little flag, stick it in the ground near your mailbox or near your front door so that everyone can see it as they drive by. Let's be a West Laurel community of red, white and blue.
We can thank neighbor Myron Shumway, "Shum," for flying the American flag high on the corner of Bond Mill Road and Clayburn Drive greeting all at our neighborhood entrance at Route 198 and Bond Mill Road. The Shumway family has proudly flown Old Glory for more than 40 years.
Our neighbor and Prince George's County Council member Mary Lehman is preparing for the Laurel Independence Day celebration that is being held on Saturday, July 2. The schedule for the day's events can be found at http://www.laurel.md.us/calendar/2011/07/02/laurel-fourth-july-celebration. Lehman is looking for friends to march in the parade with her at 11 a.m. If interested, please call 301-952-3887.
Have a safe and fun Fourth of July. Fly those American flags!
