West Laurel, Russett start seasons with a win

West Laurel Swim Club and Russett Swim Team both began their five-week seasons on a positive note June 18, winning their respective meets in the opening weekend of the Prince-Mont Swim League.

After a 1-4 season in 2010, the Division B West Laurel Wahoos started 2011 on the right foot, defeating guests Whitehall Pool and Tennis Club, of Bowie, 307-267.

Max Bagileo (U-8 free, breast, back) was the only triple winner for the Wahoos, while Cara Sampson (9-10 fly, back), Jessica Sweitzer (15-18 fly, free), Lee Friedman (15-18 free, IM), Lucy Buda (U-8 breast, back), Olivia Petrusky (13-14 breast, IM), Eric Brothman (15-18 breast, back) and Sarah Pankratz (15-18 breast, IM) were double winners.

The Russett Sharks won a closely contested meet, defeating the Roger Carter Seals in Ellicott City, 279.5-276.5, in Division D. Before losing the last two meets of 2010, the Sharks had won 12 straight regular-season meets in a streak that dated back to 2007.

Taylor Hicks (15-18 fly, breast, IM) and Paris Hicks (13-14 fly, free, breast) were triple winners for Russett. Double winners were Allison Ritter (9-10 free, breast), Aaban Syed (U-8 breast, back), Alexandra Bowman (13-14 back, IM) and Alex Cartron (15-18 back, IM).

In Division F, Laurel City fell to visiting Hawthorne Country Club, of LaPlata, 324-230. Triple winners for Laurel were Eanna Hehir-Keys (11-12 fly, breast, IM) and Sean Whitelock (15-18 free, breast, IM), while Cameron Ott (15-18 fly, back) was a double winner.

In C Division, Montpelier Community Association lost to Marlton Swim and Recreation Club, of Upper Marlboro, 292-272, at home.

Triple winners were Thomas Brown de Colstoun (11-12 fly, back, IM), Matt Derrick (15-18 fly, free, IM), Naomi Mills (15-18 fly, free, IM), and Suzannah Mills (11-12 free, back, IM). Carissa Forrey (9-10 fly, free), Carolyn Sutton (11-12 fly, breast) and Dylan Buehler (13-14 fly, IM) were double winners for the Marlins.

After a perfect 5-0 record in 2010, the Silver Spring Swim Team, based at Patuxent Greens, started its season with a 327-197 loss to Division A opponent Takoma Park D.C. Swim Team, at home.

Double winners for Silver Spring were Amanda Wenhold (9-10 fly, back), Jaimy Wenhold (11-12 fly, IM), Jeffrey Ly (15-18 fly, back), Nancy Schwartz (15-18 fly, breast), Richard Do (11-12 breast, back) and Madison Oehler (11-12 breast, back).

Despite several swimmers setting new team records, the West Arundel Swim Team lost to guests Kingfish Swim Club, of Mitchellville, 307-269, in a Division C match-up.

The Venit family ran the show for the Aqua Ducks, with Jay (11-12 fly, breast, IM), Michael (U-8 free, breast, back), and Kellianne (15-18 free, breast, IM) all finishing as triple winners. Kellianne Venit set team records in all three events (58.57 in free, 35.25 in breast and 1:07.59 in IM), and Jay Venit set a team record in breaststroke at 35.56.

Double winners Ryan Webb (13-14 fly, IM) and Billy Rodgers (15-18 fly, IM) also set team records: Webb in fly at 27.38 and IM at 1:03.40, and Rodgers in IM at 1:04.35.

Upcoming June 25 meets include the MVP Dolphins (DC) at Silver Spring, Westlake Village Swim Team (Waldorf) at West Laurel, Cheverly Swim and Racquet Club at West Arundel, Northridge Swim Team (Bowie) at Montpelier, Pointer Ridge Swim and Racquet (Bowie) at Russett and Laurel City at Prince George's Park and Recreation.
