Prince George's County Public Schools has initiated a new annual athletics activity fee for students who are selected as members of an interscholastic athletic team in response to revenue cuts for the 2011-2012 academic year. A one-time fee of $50 will be collected prior to the beginning of each sports season and will cover the student's participation in high school athletics for the entire year, even if they transfer to another PGCPS school or are selected to participate on multiple athletic teams, according to a release from PGCPS.
Parents or guardians will be notified of the fee at the beginning of the school year and each sports season. Families experiencing financial hardship can request a modified payment plan or a waiver of the fee from their child's school. The ability to pay the fee will not affect a student's selection for participation in interscholastic athletics, as selection is based on competitive performance in the specific activity. The fee is not refundable if a student quits the team, leaves the school district or is cut for violating team rules.
