Patuxent Art League founder receives member prize for her watercolor

On Sunday, Dec 4, the Montpelier Arts Center was the setting for the annual Patuxent Art League Open Juried Exhibition.

Guests viewed the works accepted into the exhibition and had the opportunity to chat with many of the participating artists. Fifty-six works — utilizing various media, including watercolor, acrylic, oils, mixed media and photography — were on display.

The first-place award went to Frances Borchardt for her work "Cornhill Doors," which uses a printer's type case with rolled photographs to portray a variety of colorful doors and frames.

Thiem-Kim Phan's "Whitney," a female nude portrayed in shades of beige watercolor, took second place.

"A Watched Pot," a watercolor showing a chef in his white smock observing a large pot simmering on the stove, earned third place for artist Bill Wilson.

Honorable mentions went to Martin Slater for his charcoal on paper, "Marjan 5"; Theresa Harrison for her digital photograph, "Virginia Beach Barrier"; and Michael Spears, of West Laurel, for his mixed-media work, "Soft Rocks."

Victoria Falls resident Rose Lomangino was awarded the Art League's member prize for her watercolor, "Mexican Market." The work depicts realistic and abstract market figures in colors ranging from light pastel to bright. Rose has lived in the South Laurel/Montpelier area for more than 35 years and is the founder of the Patuxent Art League, which she has spearheaded for many years.

Her objective in forming the league was to present local artists with "opportunities to grow and refine their talents in a wonderful supportive environment." The group holds monthly meetings at the Maryland City at Russet branch library.

Another Laurel artist, Karen Cain, also had her oil on canvas work "December Lunar Eclipse" on view in the show. Cain described getting up at 3 a.m. to observe the eclipse, taking photos and doing on-the-spot drawings to serve as models for the finished work.

The juror for this year's exhibition was painter David Buckley Good. After viewing the impressive collection, guests were treated to a wide variety of finger-food refreshments.

On Friday, Dec. 9, District 1 Council member Mary Lehman will host a free breakfast for local senior residents at the Laurel-Beltsville Senior Activity Center, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. A delicious breakfast will be available, as well as an opportunity to talk with our District 1 council representative about services available to seniors in our community.
