A popular summer feature in our community is the summer concert series hosted by the South Laurel Recreation Council and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. The concerts are held on the Montpelier Mansion grounds from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. This year's series begins on Friday, June 29 with the Retro-Rockets performing oldies from the '50s, '60s and '70s. Also featured this summer will be Appaloosa (classic and pop rock) on July 13; Riseband and Show (rhythm and blues and Motown) on July 27; and I & I Riddim (Caribbean) on Aug 10. In the event of heavy rain at the time of the concert, the event will be canceled. Call 301-953-7882 after 5 p.m. the day of the concert for verification.

There are several changes for the area summer playground programs this season. The program usually held at Montpelier Elementary has been canceled, and the program scheduled to begin June 25 at James Harrison Elementary will be held at Oaklands Elementary. These changes are related to ongoing construction projects at the schools. For information on the playgrounds, go to pgpark.com.
